Fedora 28 Workstation beta release is major milestone in the development of upcoming Fedora 28 stable release planned for May 2018. Fedora ships most of the applications from GNOME project, except web browser. It uses Firefox as default web browser instead of epiphany provided by GNOME project.

Fedora 28 ships LibreOffice 6.0.1.1 in default installation. This is the latest version of productivity suite at the moment.

As per the statistics shown by gnome-system-monitor, Fedora 28 takes around 1.2 GB of memory on idle state. This is very high and may be due to recently discovered memory leak issue in GNOME Desktop environment.

At the same time, top command shows a memory usage around 800 MB.

The GNOME calendar application

The GNOME clocks application with which we can create clocks showing current time at various parts of world, set alarm, stopwatch and timer.

GNOME Maps helps us to explore the earth in easy way.

GNOME Weather app shows real time weather in various parts of world. It has also a beautiful illustration to indicate the weather

GNOME Control Centre or simply Settings. One of the key highlight of GNOME control centre 3.28 is ability to remember previously opened tab.

Comparing to previous releases, background selection is very poor in Fedora 28 beta. There are only two wallpaper images shipped in Fedora ISO.

GNOME Software helps to easily install, remove and update application. When we launches this for the first time, it asks whether we want to enable 3rd party repos which will give access to a wide range of proprietary applications.

With GNOME Software all of the installed applications can be removed or updated.

In GNOME Software, applications has been classified to different categories.

GNOME Calendar cum notification widget shows a small calendar with weather details and world clock times. It also includes various notifications generated by the system.

GNOME System Menu helps to configure brightness and volume and to manager network connection. It also includes shortcuts for settings, rotate screen, lock screen and poweroff.

Conclusion

Usually, we don't write conclusion in DistroScreens. But, for Fedora 28 I want to write it as it is doing better than it's ancestors. Recent releases of Fedora used to crash occasionally after connecting with the network and I had a gut feeling like Fedora releases are coming without any proper QA.

When it comes to Fedora 28, it is pretty solid and working smoothly. I have n't experienced any unexpected behavior while exploring Fedora 28 Workstation beta. Let's hope the final release of Fedora 28 will also carry this much quality and regain it's reputation as a reliable operating system.

Trisquel is a Libre GNU/Linux distribution that completely adheres to the Free Software Foundation guide lines. Trisquel 8 Flidas is an upcoming stable release of Trisquel, based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS branch. This is going to be the first release of the project featuring MATE Desktop instead of discontinued GNOME 2.x. Let's have a quick walk through various screens of Trisquel 8.

Trisquel 8, just like it's parent, makes use of LightDM Display Manager. The visible differences with Ubuntu includes background change and the trisquel logo.

Trisquel 8 is the first release of Trisquel that uses MATE as default desktop environment. It is customised to look like the GNOME 2.x desktop used in previous releases.

Despite having several application menus for mate desktop, Trisquel uses the default Main Menu. it is exactly similar to the one included in previous release. In user experience point of view, the developers could have replaced this with a more modern menu like Brisk Menu developed by Solus project. hmm.... Wait a minute.. There may be some policy issues for including Brisk Menu.

Caja File Manager. There is a decent in Gtk theme and icon theme included in Trisquel. It looks almost like in previous releases. But we can't forget the effort taken to migrate that user experience from discontinued GNOME 2.x project to MATE Desktop.

MATE Terminal is default terminal emulator in Trisquel 8. The screenfetch command is used for illustration purpose. Screenfetch correctly identifies the distributions and draws an ugly logo in terminal window.

Abrowser is used as default web browser in Trisquel 8. On the first launch, it asks user to configure their privacy settings. In this page, we can configure the system to match with our privacy and feature requirements.

VLC is used as default media player in Trisquel. Previous releases of Trisquel used to ship totem as default media player. In this release VLC 2.2.2 is included, which quite outdated. But that is what we can expect from a system based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

LibreOffice productivity suite is available in default installation of Trisquel 8.

Trisquel 8 uses a standard application manager for adding/removing applications.

For advanced users, Trisquel 8 includes synaptic package manager.

The MATE Control Centre - A central hub to look for all configuration options.

On idle state, Trisquel 8 consumes around 540 MB of memory, which is expected from a distribution featuring MATE Desktop.

When we look for idle state memory consumption on command line, it is very less. It shows around 293 MB memory.

The MATE Tweak tool contains option to switch between various panel layouts. I think, Trisquel team is quite ready with this configuration. Because, they don't have any name for their default configuration.

The GNOME 2.x layout takes use to the old GNOME world with panels on top and bottom.

The openSUSE layout is with a bottom panel. Alternatively, we can choose the Redmond layout. It is like open suse layout, but includes a modern menu with search options.

First impression of Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 LTS Desktop. There is no much difference comparing to the previous release, except the transparent panel on top, Date & Time Conky on Desktop and additional applet icons on the panel.

The Budgie Welcome App - An app developed by Ubuntu Budgie team that introduces the operating system to the users and help them to perform various customizations like layout change, theme change, applet installation ..etc. This app is expected to launch in the first run of the operating system. Unfortunately, I could n't find it on live image and had to install it explicitly from repositories.

Fedora 27 LXQt spin screenshots

I was always curious to explore LXQt desktop since the moment I heard about it for the first time. I have tried installing LXQt desktop in Fedora & Ubuntu releases by configuring third-party repositories. But my experience was always incomplete. Every time, there was something missing. Like entries in the application menu, desktop background ..etc. The Manjaro LXQt Edition, on the other hand, was over customized with a lot of colors and effects. I did n't want to use such a system in my daily life.

Recently, I saw someone shared a screenshot of Fedora 27 LXQt spin on facebook. I was quite desperate with my experience with recent Fedora Workstation releases because of it's poor quality and lack of stability. Still, I decided to give a try for the LXQt spin. The ArchMerge 6.3.1 Xfce Desktop. First impression. It is looking dark with some modern wallpaper. A dock is present on left side of the desktop which contains a bunch of shortcuts to various applications.

ArchMerge makes use of Xfce 4.12 Desktop from Arch repositories. ArchMerge does not reinvent anything, instead it makes use of existing stuffs from Arch repositories. Probably you may have noticed change in wallpaper. Yes. ArchMerge periodically change wallpapers unless we stop it explicitly.

The Whisker Application menu is a component in recent Xfce4 featured distributions. Unfortunately, in ArchMerge, Whisker Menu is not configured to popup with Super key which is a desired feature.

SolydXK 201801 Xfce Desktop. On first impression, it looks exactly like Plasma Desktop. The bottom panel is made transparent and is themed like Plasma.

Similar to recent Xfce flavors, SolydXK 201801 also features Xfce 4.12, the +latest available release of Xfce Desktop Environment.

The Whisker Application Menu is also themed well. Unlike many other Xfce flavor, application menu is not looking that odd comparing to it's surrounding. However, a bit transparency will make it better. Best point is application menu is configured to launch with the Super key, which is a much expected feature in modern operating systems.

The top utility shows resource usage at idle state. SolydXK consumes around 580 MB of memory on rest. Which is not bad enough comparing to the user experience provided.

Mousepad is a simple, yet effective text editor.

Packages isthe pacakge manager used in SolydXK. I'm not familiar with GUI tool. It is looking similar to Yumex. The package manager used to come as front end of YUM.

Initial impression of Slax 9.3.0 desktop environment. The desktop gives a very pleasent experience with nice background and transparent panel.
