Linux Mint 18 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and it provides Cinnamon 3.x. Additionally it is coming with XApplication - which is a collection of generic applications used in GNOME 2.x desktops. These applications will allow Linux Mint to provide traditional user experience.
